'Socker','Max 500','747'등 감성 록의 선두주자! 2016년 스웨덴 음악 명예의 전당 이름을 올린 국보급 록 밴드 Kent 켄트. 26년동안의 음악적 커리어를 마무리하는 12번째 정규 앨범 Då Som Nu För Alltid (Then as Now for Ever) 스웨덴이 낳은 록 밴드 켄트가 무려 사반세기를 넘긴 음악 여정에 마침내 종지부를 찍기로 했다. 공식 홈페이지(kent.nu)에 공개한 위 문구는 흡사 묘비명 같다. ‘본인들이 원치 않았기에’ 영어 앨범도 달랑 둘 뿐이고, 영미 차트에서 큰 상업적 성공을 거둔 팀도 아닌데, 그 파장이 제법 만만치 않은 실정이다. 이들의 음악은 심야 라디오 채널이나 CF, 드라마 삽입곡으로 혹은 블로그나 미니 홈피 BGM으로 국내 팝 팬들에 진작부터 ‘나만의 힐링 음악’으로 깊이 파고들어 있었던 때문이다. 앨범 재킷 이미지마저 충격적이다. 요아킴 베르그(Joakim Berg, 보컬), 새미 서비오(Sami Sirviö, 기타), 마틴 스콜드(Martin Sköld, 베이스), 마커스 머스토넌(Markus Mustonen, 드럼), 이 네 멤버의 분신 같은 해골 넷이 정장 차림으로 카드 게임을 하는데, 테이블엔 보기만 해도 뒷골 뻐근한 스트레이트 럼주와 검붉은 장미꽃 한 송이가 놓여있다. 한 모금 빨아도 목이 칼칼해질 것 같은 담배도 아직 불 붙은 채고, 살짝 보이는 패는 그간 출시한 정규 음반 매수대로 하트 문양이 12개다. 이들은 지난 2015년 6월에 홈페이지 공지를 통해, 뉴욕 소재의 유명한 [일렉트릭 레이디 스튜디오]에서 12번째 정규 앨범을 레코딩 할 거라 알려왔다. 이듬해인 올 2월에는 켄트가 [스웨덴 명예의 전당]에 헌액 되어 팬들도 꼭 자기 일인 양 함께 기뻐했다. 그러니 이런 청천벽력 같은 비보가 터지리라 상상이나 했겠는가? 화이트 데이를 기해, 이들은 자기네 신보가 [Då Som Nu För Alltid]라는 타이틀로 선보여 질 거라 전했다. 영어로는 ‘Then as Now for Ever’ 비슷한 뉘앙스겠다. 마른 하늘에 날벼락도 아니고 “그러면 현재로써는 이 정도로 종지부를 찍는다”니 어디 말이나 될법한가. 공식 페이스북 페이지에 함께 올린 동영상 티저 영상이 팬들의 찢긴 마음을 한 번 더 들쑤셨다. 드럼 비트가 리드하는 심플한 연주 위로, 그간 켄트가 발표한 앨범 재킷에 차용된 이미지들이 고스란히 담겨 흐른 ‘슬픈데 경쾌한’ 행진곡 풍의 소품이었다. 포니테일을 한 해골 소녀, 흰색 호랑이, 말 탄 소녀, 비행기, 설경 같은 이미지들이 화면을 가득 채워 노스텔지아를 자극했다. 지난 5월 20일 출시한 12번쨰 정규 앨범 [Då Som Nu För Alltid]는, “그만 둔다는 느낌이 어떤 것일지 궁금하다”며, “결국 모든 것은 감정의 문제”기에, “완성된 새로운 음악들로 자축하며 이별하고 싶다”던 자신들의 성명을 올곧이 체화해낸 작품집이다. 눈물 뽑아낼 만한 곡들만 작정하고 포진시키는 따위의, 켄트답지 않은 시도는 당연히 없었다. 넘실대는 비트의 향연이 되려 먹먹한 ‘Vi Är För Alltid(We Are Forever)’에 이어 흐르는, 영화 [수색역]을 연상시키는 아린 느낌의 ‘Den Vänstra Stranden (The Left Bank)‘ 정도가 공동 집필 곡이다. [그레이 아나토미] 삽입곡 ‘What Have I Done’으로 알려진 애나 테른하임(Anna Ternheim)과 입을 맞춘 ‘Nattpojken & Dagflickan(Night Boy & Day Girl)도 전작 [Tigerdrottningen (Tiger Queen)](2014) 때마냥 보컬 협업을 통해 완성한 트랙이다. 왜 이들을 굳이 “U2, 라디오헤드, 콜드플레이 그리고 디페시 모드(Depeche Mode)에 대한 북유럽의 화답”이라 부르는지 알겠다. |
