Set Up (Feat. 김재용) *** 음반 상세 설명 *** 90년대 말 국내 인디 록의 전성기를 관통하며 수많은 공연을 통해 꾸준히 실력과 인기를 쌓던 힙포켓이 99년 말 발표한 동명 타이틀 앨범이후 4년만에 드디어 '스페셜 앨범'을 가지고 돌아왔다. '힙포켓' 음악을 명확히 한마디로 구분짓기는 힘들다. 이들의 음악은 랩이란 표현의 공통점 안에서 전형적인 하드코어 밴드의 성격을 보이다가도 때론 정통 하드 록의 느낌을, 또 때론 모던 록 성향까지, 톡톡 튀는 감성의 다양함을 보여준다. 1집 발매 이후 대형 록 공연들과 단독 공연 등을 통해 꾸준히 팬들과 만나는 한편 2집 준비에 힘써왔던 이들은 2002년 팀을 재정비, 음악적 성향 역시 많은 부분을 가다듬게 된다. 리더 '노병기'를 주축으로 새로운 멤버 '권용현'이 편성된 라인업은 1집에서의 성격을 바탕으로 더욱 세련되고 좀 더 일관적인 방향을 제시하고 있다. 스페셜 앨범 [Identity] 1번 트랙, 인스트루멘탈 "共 (공)"은 국악과 양악의 퓨전 트래티셔널 팀으로 실력을 인정받고 있는 '슬기둥'(장재효)이 참여, 기존 '힙포켓' 음악 중 가장 신선하면서도 1집 팬들에겐 다소 충격적인 사운드를 연출한다. 이미 '장재효'의 경우는 그룹 'NEXT', 뉴 에이지 아티스트 '양방언'과의 공연 등 기존 국악인들과는 차별화 되는 새로운 시도들을 선보인 바 있는데 이번 '힙포켓'과의 만남에서도 '월드 뮤직'의 성격이 가미된 주목할 만한 곡 하나를 또 탄생시켰다. 이번 앨범의 타이틀곡인 "Transfer"는 타이틀곡답게 이번 2집에서의 '힙포켓' 성향을 가장 명쾌하게 보여준다. 느리고 묵직하면서도 감미로운 멜로디 라인은 기존 '힙포켓' 팬들은 물론 이번 스페셜 앨범으로 처음 '힙포켓'을 접하는 음악 팬들에게도 매력적인 선물일 듯 싶다. 또 하나의 재미! 보통 한 곡이 다른 버전의 곡으로 앨범에 재 수록될 때는 방송 에어플레이를 염두에 둬 길이를 짧게 한다거나 또는 팬 서비스 차원에서 편곡의 변화, 리믹스를 하는데 반해, 이번에 2가지 버전이 수록되는 "Transfer"는 객원 보컬 '김이안'에 의해 또 다른 가사와 보컬 어레인지를 통해 완전히 다른 또 하나의 곡으로 수록된다. 하나의 곡을 뮤지션에 따라 어떻게 소화하고 의미를 담는지 색다른 경험이 될 것이 분명하다. 4번째 트랙으로 수록된 "After Life"는 음반 발매 이전부터 음악 관계자들에게 좋은 반응을 얻은 곡으로 어쿠스틱 기타의 선율과 블루지한 연주의 조화가 인상적이다. 대공황 시기의 혼란스러운 도시를 연상시키는 이국적인 느낌의 곡 구성과 더불어 거친듯한 느낌을 주는 노병기의 보컬은 5분 30여 초의 시간 동안 청자들을 혼란과 정적의 시간으로 초대한다. '힙포켓'이 다른 밴드들과 구분될 수 밖에 없는 '그들만의 깊이'를 체감할 수 있게 하는 강력 추천 트랙! 기존 팬들을 위한 최적의 선물, 객원 뮤지션 '이주한'의 브라스가 흥미로운 6번째 트랙 "A hen broods"은 기존 1집 때의 음악성이 완벽에 다다렀음과 트렌드를 놓치지 않는 '힙포켓'의 감성을 잘 증명한다. 재기 발랄한 어느 유망 신인 밴드의 데뷔 곡 같은 느낌의 "A hen broods" 은 듣는 이로 하여금 이들의 지난 4년의 공백에 대한 불안감을 일시에 날려버리기에 충분하다. 기존 '힙포켓' 팬들에겐 가장 즐거운 선물일 듯하다. 마지막 7번째 곡인 보너스 트랙 "Set Up"은 지난 01년 3월 발매된 프로젝트 앨범 "Hero 愛 Rock" 에 수록된 곡을 새롭게 편곡한 곳으로 당시 방송 정지로 인해 제대로 선보일 기회조차 없었던 원을 이번에 풀게 되었다. 이번 수록되는 "Set Up"은 기존 곡과 리듬에서도 많은 차이를 보이며 더욱 댄서블한 느낌이 가미되었는데, 옛 원곡과 비교한다면 '힙포켓'의 그간 음악적인 변화를 알 수 있는 재미있는 경험도 될 것이다. 이번 '힙포켓'의 스페셜 앨범은 올 하반기 발매 예정인 정규 2집 앨범(현재 약 70% 완료)에 앞선 신호탄 역할이다. 1집 발매 이후 현재까지 거의 매월 1회 이상의 공연을 진행할 정도로 꾸준한 공연을 진행했지만 신규 앨범이 이후 없었다는 것은 팬들에겐 큰 아쉬움이자 갈증으로 남아 있었다. 그런 점에서 이번 앨범에서는 단순히 한두 곡의 신곡에 전작의 히트곡 을 채운 1.5 집 성격이라거나, 서너 곡이 담긴 싱글 개념의 앨범이 아닌 일반 정규작과 비교해도 구성이나 완성도면에서 손색 없는 그들의 노력을 읽을 수 있다. 또한 이번 앨범은 4년이란 기간 동안을 꾸준히 기다려준 팬들에 대한 감사와 사죄의 표현이다. 또 '힙포켓' 스스로 에게도 새로운 도전과 시작의 출발점이 될 것이다. 자료/플래티넘미디어 / 2003-07-03 |
