Broken Bones 애퀄렁(AQUALUNG) [Memory Man] 영화 [우리, 사랑일까요?]의 주제가 'Brighter Than Sunshine'으로 주목을 받기 시작한 영국 출신 싱어송라이터 애퀄렁의 새 앨범. 버트 바카락, 비틀즈, 비치 보이스 풍의 아름다운 멜로디와 라디오헤드, 콜드 플레이의 몽환적인 음성을 모두 느낄 수 있는 앨범은 중독적인 아름다움을 발산한다. 애퀄렁 Aqualung/ Memory Man 1972년생으로 런던을 기반으로 활동 중인 애퀄렁(Aqualung)은 삶의 정신적 영양소로서 위안의 힘을 발휘하는 음악의 실체를 잘 파악하고 있는 뮤지션 중에 하나다. 맷 헤일즈(Matt Hales)가 본명인 이 잘생긴 청년은 어린 시절부터 음악과 함께 자랐던 타고난 뮤직 키드였다. 아버지가 레코드 가게를 하는 덕에 음악을 옆에 끼고 살았던 그는 이를 통해 음악이 사람의 감성에 지대한 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 깨달을 수 있었다. 이후 작곡을 전문적으로 공부하며 음악인으로서의 미래에 대한 가닥을 잡아나간 맷 헤일즈는 최초 클래식 필드에서 신고식을 치루고, 1990년대에 접어들면서는 브릿팝 밴드 루쓰(Ruth)와 더 45's(The 45's) 그룹 활동을 통해, 대중음악계에서 자신의 재능을 꽃피우기 시작했다. 이후 혼자만의 음악 세계를 펼쳐나가기로 결심한 맷 헤일즈는 애퀄렁이라는 가명을 정한 뒤 팝 뮤지션으로서 첫 데뷔를 준비했다. 2002년 셀프 타이틀 처녀작 [Aqualung]이 바로 그 결과물로 탄생하였고, 음반의 수록곡 'Strange and Beautiful (I'll Put a Spell on You)'이 폭스바겐 TV 선전의 배경음악으로 쓰이면서 다수 대중에 회자되며 팝 계의 기린아로 급부상했다. 2003년 선보인 2집 [Still Life]는 그러한 주변의 높아진 욕구를 완벽하게 채워준 수작이었다. 라디오헤드(Radiohead), 콜드플레이(Coldplay) 등에 비견되는 아티스트라는 찬사가 쏟아진 것도 이즈음부터였다. 2년 뒤인 2005년 1집과 2집의 주요 레퍼토리를 합친 편집 음반 [Strange And Beautiful]을 미국에서 발표한 그는 빌보드 핫시커즈 차트 정상을 밟으며 대서양 건너편에서도 순항을 이어나갔다. 그리고 다시 2년이 지난 2007년. 애퀄렁은 신보 [Memory Man]을 완성한 뒤 대중들의 반응을 조심스레 기다리고 있다. 어느새 팝 계의 '빅 네임'이 되어버린 그이기에 평단에서 부는 바람은 일단 순풍인 듯싶다. 음악 전문지 [롤링 스톤]의 필자이자 현재 가장 저명한 평론가 중 한 명인 앤소니 드커티스(Anthony DeCutis)가 그의 바이오그래피와 앨범 해설을 써준 것만 봐도 이를 잘 알 수 있다. 앤소니 드커티스는 본작을 "절묘하고도 아름다운 멜로디와 풍성한 사운드 텍스처의 완벽한 결합"이라고 결론짓고 있는데, 그의 표현대로 음반은 애퀄렁 음악의 정수를 쾌척하고 있다 정의해도 과언 아닐 수준을 들려준다. 첫 싱글로 예정되어 있는 'Pressure Suit'가 그에 대한 훌륭한 예시다. 변조된 보컬 음성으로 출발하는 곡에서 애퀄렁은 미세하게 찌그러진 베이스, 명징하게 울려 퍼지는 기타 톤, 콜드플레이풍의 피아노 선율, 적절하게 볼륨 조절된 드럼 등을 멋지게 믹스해 풍성한 공간감을 연출해낸다. 또한 'Can't Stop Loving You'라는 가사가 반복되는 후반부를 통해서는 멜로디 메이커로서의 재주를 단언적으로 과시한다. 한마디로 시간의 이끼가 귀에 내려앉은 음악 마니아라면 고품질임을 즉각 인정할 수 있을 앨범. 한 올 한 올 정성스레 천을 짜듯 직조한 농밀한 사운드와 천상의 하모니가 풍부한 스펙트럼 속에서 앙상블을 일궈내며 듣는 이들을 심층의 시간 속으로 인도한다. 자연스레 사운드가 애퀄렁의 목소리 속으로 스미고, 그 목소리가 다시 사운드를 통해 우러나오는 과정이 반복되면서 결국 음악이란 매 순간마다 신생하는 것임을 깨달을 수 있을 것이다. 이 조화 속에서 애퀄렁 음악의 독자성은 그 섬세한 기품을 부드럽게 전달한다. |
